In this introduction to the exhibition and the region Lewis Biggs and Robert Hopper, curators of artranspennine98, set out their thoughts on the installation of art in public places
artranspennine98 is perhaps the largest exhibition of contemporary art ever held in this country. Despite the growing number of large, recurring international exhibitions, there are compelling reasons for adding another to the list. Our ambition to make this exhibition has been driven equally by a broad cultural agenda and a specific curatorial one. Much of the energy required to make such an exhibition realisable comes from the growing number of visual art organisations, and the growing audience for contemporary art in this region. The particular quality of the art derives from our own curatorial beliefs.
